Flow cytometric methods are useful for characterizing properties of individual cells, quantifying the distribution of cells that bear a specific phenotype within a mixed population of cells, and sorting specific types of cells. Flow cytometry is also used in cell cycle analysis and determination of chromosome ploidy in animals and plants.

Services and Location
Located in Animal Disease and Biotechnology Facility (ADBF Rm 4075), the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine operates this facility. The facility has three flow cytometers: FACScan, FACSort, FACSVantage (Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems) and two Macintosh workstations for data analysis. The capabilities of these three machines are summarized below.
The FACScan is a simple flow cytometer. It has a single laser and can analyze five separate parameters (side and forward scatter light scatter and 3 fluorescent markers).
The FACSort has two lasers and can analyze and sort cells based on 6 separate parameters (side and forward scatter, and 4 fluorescent markers).
The FACS Vantage SE is a high-speed cell sorter. It has two lasers and can analyze and sort based on 8 separate parameters (side and forward scatter and 6 fluorescent markers).
All flow cytometers have internet access and are equipped with software for data acquisition and analysis.
There are two separate computer workstations for data analysis.

Technical Support and Training
Technical support is available to users of this facility.

The FACScan and FACSort are user-friendly flow cytometers that can be used by students, staff, and faculty without technical assistance after learning how to operate them. Technical and operations support will be provided to CRB members who wish to use these machines. Training will be provided to CRB members who will require more than occasional use of these machines.

The FACS Vantage requires technical assistance. Arrangements have to be made to schedule use. Training in the use of the sorter will be provided to a designated technician or graduate student in laboratories requiring long-term heavy use of the sorter.

Access and Fees
Authorized individuals have access to the core facility at all times during the week and weekends. Frequent users can obtain key badges for entrance into the flow cytometry room. A key to the room will be available in Dr. Davis' laboratory for occasional users of the facility, Bustad Hall Rm 324 (Mary Jo Hamilton will show authorized users where the key is kept). Users need to reserve time they will be using the flow cytometers. Call Dr. Davis' lab, 5-6058, to reserve time on the flow cytometers.

Current Flow Cytometry Core Facility users are an hourly fee for the use of the machines. The current rate for CRB members is $30/hr (the rate is $60/hr for non-CRB members). There is no charge for the use of computers for data analysis.
