Summary:

The Transgenic Core aids in providing, maintaining, and identifying transgeic and knockout mice at a subsidized cost to investigators within the Center for Reproductive Biology. Therefore, the objectives of the center are: 1) Facilitate acquisition of transgenic and knockout animals from outside vendors; 2) Provide training to genotype transgenic or knockout mice; 3) Provide expertise to maintain and establish initial transgenic or knockout founders for colonies; 4) Provide initial space for transgenic and knockout colonies.

Services:

1) Facilitate acquisition of transgenic and knockout animals from outside vendors at reduced costs (2004).

Transgenic mice- approximately $3,400/construct.
Knockout mice- approximately-$3,300/gene.

2) Provide training to genotype transgenic or knockout mice. This includes DNA extraction from tails, PCR or southern technologies to identify transgenic mice or knockouts. Initially, the technician will cut tails, wean, etc and conduct DNA preps. Later the investigators will be required to conduct DNA extractions and genotyping.

3) Provide expertise to maintain and establish initial transgenic or knockout founders for colonies. The main responsibility of technical support will be in general matings, cullings, weaning, cutting tails, etc of initial transgenic founders to establish colonies. Once the colonies are established the genotyping and maintenance of large colonies will be the responsibility of the individual laboratory.

4) Provide initial space for transgenic and knockout colonies. Space will be set aside in the Eastlick Vivarium for the Transgenic Core. However, investigators that maintain large colonies of transgenic mice may need to consider space limitations and acquire their own space when necessary. The core will set colony limits with individual investigators based on the need for the facility.

All services will be processed through the Transgenic Core Laboratory (Dr. Eric Nilsson at Science 507, Washington State University).

The transgenic core charges rates based on the vendor cost and does not charge any fee for this service.

Transgenic core will aid with selection of targeted ES cells and testing for germline transmission of transgenic and chimeric knockout animals. The transgenic core does not charge any fee for this service.

Transgenic core will also have dedicated space in the Washington State University Vivarium where knockout and transgenic mice can be housed at cost to the investigator. The transgenic core does not charge any additional fee for this service.
