Reproductive Immunology/Biochemistry

RESEARCH SUMMARY:

My interests in inflammation, cytokines, and inflammatory mediators of macrophages, most particularly bovine alveolar macrophages, have led me to initiate a new collaborative research area focusing on these molecules and fetal and maternal macrophages during bovine gestation. My laboratory has developed an extensive methodology for characterizing macrophage function, including: arachidonate metabolism, particle uptake, bactericidal activity, and cell surface complement regulatory proteins. Although the publications listed below reflect only bovine alveolar macrophage mediators. The technology can be applied readily to maternal and fetal macrophages. In the long-term, survival of the fetus, the chemical signalling between these important macrophage subpopulations are critical for survival.
